Small Changes: Shredded Cheese

Today we're not just talking cheese, we're talking shredded cheese. This is the time of year when everyone has a party or picnic to go to, and most of the time you need to bring a dish of some kind. Many of these dishes call for cheese.

Sidenote: I'm so in love with cheese that I have to restrict it from my diet 99% of the time. I cannot be trusted with the creamy goodness that is cheese. Colby. Cheddar. Mozzarella. Gouda. Gorgonzola. Monterey Jack. Cream. Pepper Jack. Sigh. I love cheese, but it does not love me. It tempts me ever so. Today at lunch I splurged and order chicken parm. I only ate about half of it and that should last me several months. My body works much better when I stay away from cheese and dairy in general. Though, surprisingly, ice cream does not affect me in a bad way. Hmmmm.....

Anyway, back to cheese. Many recipes call for shredded cheese and the food industry has listened and provided a myriad of choices in the shredded cheese department and they have an entire section devoted to bags of cheese.

One would think that it would just be a bag of shredded cheese,  but it is not. 

Check out the ingredient list of this bag of Kraft shredded mozzarella:
 And here is a package of mozzarella that you would need to shred yourself:
 Kraft shredded cheddar:
 And a block of store-brand cheddar:
 The shredded cheese has a lot more ingredients in it. Things that you really don't need to have in your body. Mold inhibitor? Really? Yuck.

How hard is it to shred your own cheese? If you're truly opposed to it (or just lazy...ha ha) then consider it a mini-workout.

Remember: read the labels. Just because they sell it in the store does not mean that you should ingest it.

    Scott & I usually shred our own cheese. This is often because it is cheaper to buy a block of cheese and do it ourselves than to buy it shredded. (We get a 5 lb. block of mozzarella at Sam's Club for $8 or $9 something.)

    It's good to know that this is not just good for the wallet! :)

    I guess I need a new shredder so I can shred my own cheese now. Thanks for the heads up.

The Tool Box

I can hear my husband clanging tools around in the garage. He's going through his twenty-four year collection and putting together a tool box for our twenty-two year old son.  Gulp. When did we become parents of an adult who is able to move out and live on his own? He's coming home tomorrow to collect the furniture he's chosen from our house and some other things. He's been gone for a few years but has always come home for summer and holidays. This time it's permanent. There won't be any more summers at home. I won't have to tiptoe around while he's still sleeping. I won't have to chase him out of the shower because he's been in there for a very long time. I won't have to buy Cooper cheese or boxes of Macaroni & Cheese anymore.  The tool box Wayne is putting together for him will last him many years. He'll hang pictures, tighten bolts, and fix small accidents with it. It'll stay by his side as he begins new chapters...

choose your own way

While I was being a good wife this morning, completing the one task my husband asked of me (using the squeegee thing to push melting snow and ice out of the garage after he left for work), I had time to think about life and all of it's stuff.
