Recent finds

What do you think happened when I  opened the cover of this first edition (11th printing) Dr Seuss book and saw this? Yeah. I sat back and said, "Well, that's worth something." And it was. I sold it for $400. Probably could have gotten more but I was thrilled with that.    This old granny square afghan I got at a yard sale for $1. I'm asking $90 for it. I never liked these when they were popular the first time around. Still don't. But there are collectors out there who want them. I'll let you know why if I ever find out. Ha ha .   This is something that I did not buy. I'm sure it would be worth something but to me it was just hideous. Plug it in and it lights up. Ick. Ick. Ick. This is something else that I did not buy. A fragrance named Arrogant . How bad are we as a society that this even exists?

What's Going On?

We've just ended a week that has had more changes happen to our nation than any other single week in American history. I'm not one to normally discuss these topics but I'm flabbergasted here. First the Confederate Flag was banned.  Okay, really, this should have happened at the end of the Civil War to show that we were actually the United States. The fact that it was allowed for exactly 150 years is beyond me.  I'll admit, I'm a white Yankee chick. The Confederate Flag was never offensive in my eyes. It didn't signify anything degrading to blacks, I always saw it as a white-trash redneck symbol. So do what you will with that. There's now talk about banning the movie Gone with the Wind. Now, I never particularly liked that film, but to ban a movie about an era in history that happened? What's next? Banning every movie that had a Mammie in it? Or black servants?  Grow up, people. Get over yourselves. Be happy that you live now and make the most of...

On Gossip

My friend wrote these words on her Facebook page this week. I thought I'd share her wisdom... "If you don't have all the facts, you should not share the information... Gossip is a sin. The command not to bear false witness is lumped in with thou shall not murder and thou shall not steal because of all our faculties, the tongue is the hardest to control. It robs people of their character, maligns the purposes of God in a person's life and bears false witness against the character of God! If you hear something from a third party source, you are not to share it. If yo u hear something regarding a situation between two people and you are not one of the two, tame the tongue. (Even having information from one of the two does not qualify as the whole truth!) Do not share a prayer request for someone as a way of sharing some sensational tidbit of information that is most likely inaccurate. If you are dying to know TRUTH...go to the source. And, understand that the ...

Psalms, Confessions, and the Prayers of a Friend

Deep breath. For years I've struggled with a crazy fear of being in a car accident. It impacts my travel. I stress for days before a trip and end up working myself up so much that I rarely enjoy my time away. Last weekend we had a guest evangelist at our church. He spoke on Sunday morning about forgiveness and on Sunday night about letting go of the things that you are holding onto. I didn't have anything come into my mind that night that I needed prayer for so I prayed with other ladies. Then Tuesday happened.  We were planning to leave Wednesday morning to take our daughter and her friend to Cleveland for the Taylor Swift concert. I'd never been to Cleveland and had no idea what we were going to do while we were there and while the girls were at the show. That in itself was stressful to me. I'm used to downtown Pittsburgh where there isn't much to do within walking distance of the stadium/concert venue. I was stressing most of the day on Tuesday abo...

Iced-Tea Spoons

Some time ago I had a conversation with a lady who was complaining about always burning her fingers when she stirred milk and sugar into her coffee. The spoon wasn't long enough and it was making her angry. The next time I saw her I gave her and iced-tea spoon. She later commented that I saved her life and her fingertips because now she could stir without getting burned. I never mentioned the obvious to her.  She already had what she needed but she never saw it. You know that fork and knife in her drawer, right next to the teaspoon? Yeah, those both would've worked just fine. I've used a butter-knife to stir my tea. I've also used a fork. They work fine. Doesn't matter that it wasn't their intended use. You use what you have. I've often found that to be true in life. We generally have what we need right in front of us. Sometimes we just need to open our eyes.

Psalm 91

Psalm 91 1  Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High     will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a] 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,     my God, in whom I trust.” 3 Surely he will save you     from the fowler’s snare     and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers,     and under his wings you will find refuge;     his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night,     nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,     nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side,     ten thousand at your right hand,     but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes     and see the punishment of the wicked. 9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”     ...

Whatever Happened to Sin?

Whatever Happened to Sin Lyrics by Steve Taylor A Christian counselor wrote, quote,  "It's the only human choice ahead If you can't support it Why don't you abort it instead?" You say you pray to the sky Why? when you're afraid to take a stand down here 'Cause while the holy talk reads like a bad ad-lib Silence screams you were robbing the crib Say it ain't none of my business, huh? A woman's got a right to choose Now a grave-digger Next you pull the trigger What then? Whatever happened to sin? I heard the Reverend say "Gay is probably normal in the Good Lord's sight What's to be debated? Jesus never stated what's right" I'm no theology nut, but The Reverend may be a little confused For if the Lord don't care And he chooses to ignore-ah Tell it to the people Of Sodom and Gomorrah Call it just an alternate lifestyle, huh? Morality lies within Consciences are restin' Please repeat the question again Whatever h...
